- The Sierra Nevada is the highest mountain range in Spain and provides tremendous scope for the adventurous mountain traveller: there are rugged peaks that rise to more than 3000m (Alta Montana), and the lower peaks of the Baja Montana also provide a spectacular walking location. The unfrequented valleys of the Alpajurras and the Marquesado Forest offer walkers a seclusion that is becoming rare in the Alps or Pyrenees.

Walking in the Sierra Nevada contains detailed route descriptions for 45 walking routes, from 3km day walks to multi-day treks in both the high and the lower areas of the range. Many of the routes can be linked together to form a longer outing and certain sections of some routes can be used as an approach to another. Unless stated otherwise in the text, route descriptions assume summer conditions.

This guidebook describes walking routes of various degrees of difficulty, from easy evening or half-day outings up to arduous multi-day mountain expeditions. Information on the road and track network is also included and this will be valuable to motorists who wish to access the remote parts of the range, and mountain bikers who may wish to incorporate unsurfaced tracks and roads into their itineraries.

The multi-day routes and longer walks described will not disappoint. The six routes described are merely a suggested selection from the almost limitless possibilities. The long-day routes assume a high level of fitness, competence and motivation as well as good conditions. Winter elevates all those routes to – with the exception of Route 42 – to expedition status. The multi-day routes are split into fairly relaxed day stages and there is no reason why the day routes could not be tackled in a more leisurely fashion over two days.
